Following on from an excellent set of conversations at the recent Northern Network for Medical Humanities Research conference, there was interest in a focused workshop on whether/when/how to encourage learning/teaching in the medical humanities to medical students. As a result, a 1-day workshop is being planned for Weds 24 January 2018 in Sheffield. We plan to include medical student representation, to ensure that we learn from our students too, and may well cover some of the following, according to the feedback we receive:

– How to inspire medical students, develop learning opportunities in the field, and raise the profile of medical humanities in our medical schools

– What we could or should teach students and/or what learning opportunities we can provide (and how or whether this differs from the excellent teaching of ethics and professionalism that happens already in all our medical schools)

– Sharing examples of best practice, teaching that’s worked… and things that haven’t

– Experience of delivering lectures, small groups, tutorials, student selected components and research projects

Venue in Sheffield and practical details to be confirmed. Please note: every effort will be made to make this workshop free to attend, but it is possible that a small charge (in the region of £35) might be needed.

I would be pleased to make a illustrated presentation on our experience of a marked manditory non-directed 2.5 credit creative Special Study Module in the arts (students choose mainly visual) at the University of Limerick Graduate Entry medical School
